In this half-day session, you'll explore a course-specific data report and a new dashboard which disaggregate course outcomes data to see how outcomes in your course break down by student group — e.g., first-generation status, transfer status, academic level, and more. After a short framing to set up the data exploration, you'll dive into your own data, discuss patterns with colleagues, and reflect on why different groups of students might be experiencing your course differently — and what you might do about it.

This session is an opportunity to practice reflective teaching — using evidence from your own course so that you can identify concrete ways to improve students’ experiences. Departmental teams are welcome to attend together if you'd like to examine a shared course collaboratively.

Before you register: have a specific course in mind that you've taught at least twice in the last five years — you'll be asked to identify it during registration.

Participants receive a $100 stipend.

Ribas (Department of Economics) about why and how to involve undergraduate students in research, particularly in disciplines where research is not traditionally organized around labs. He will discuss approaches designed to build a community around research, support students in pursuing more ambitious career goals, and help them develop the confidence and agency to direct their own learning and work. Participants will also have an opportunity to brainstorm how one or more of these approaches could be adapted to their own teaching.

A selection of sandwiches and salads will be available for those attending this session in person. We will have dairy and gluten free options available, as well as vegetarian/vegan food. If you have a dietary need outside of that, please let us know at least a week ahead of the session. You are also welcome to bring your own lunch/snack!

In this workshop, we will consider the benefits to students from engaging in active learning and explore a variety of methods and formats which can be combined to form engaging activities which align with class learning outcomes. We will also talk about activities that can be used to open and close class sessions in ways that reinforce learning. Finally, you will have a chance to begin building a lesson plan that considers students’ prior knowledge and incorporates active learning.
By the end of the workshop, you should be able to:
-- Explain the relationship between the 3 components of an active learning strategy
-- Ensure alignment between activities and class LOs
-- Describe effective strategies to open and close a class session
-- Develop aligned activities for their own courses that use a variety of methods + formats.
-- Create a lesson plan that considers students’ prior knowledge, incorporates active learning and formative assessment, and situates the present lesson within the course.

Workshops in the Ten for Teaching series focus on essential classroom teaching skills. These workshops are aligned with the outcomes of the CTL’s Evidence-Based Teaching Certificate and support instructors in building the skills they need in order to earn the certificate.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This workshop will run for one week (Mon-Fri) and is designed for you to spend 20-40 minutes per day (slightly different each day) engaging with workshop content and activities. You will receive an invitation to the Canvas course a few days before the start of the workshop. All content will be available from the start so that you can work at your own pace.

This year, the PAR Curriculum Map Template has been updated to better capture how programs are supporting the ULOs throughout a student’s journey to their degree. In this workshop, we will review the revised Curriculum Map Template, the ULO/Program Learning Outcome (PLO) alignment guidance provided by the General Education Committee, and discuss ways to make visible how your PLOs support student development of the ULOs. By the end of the session, you will be able to:
Identify criteria for aligning PLOs with ULOs when a PLO is aligned with a ULO
Investigate, with your program colleagues, how students develop towards the ULOs in your program

In this workshop, we’ll explore not only why this is helpful to students but also how to do it in our own courses. One strategy is to use rubrics which communicate the standards to students and also help us provide feedback about where they need to focus future efforts. We will explore a variety of rubrics and analyze how they can help us communicate this learning-focused feedback. Finally, you will be able to start building your own rubrics.
By the end of the workshop, you should be able to:
-- Describe how learning-focused feedback supports students
-- Identify strategies that make providing learning- focused feedback efficient
-- Analyze different rubrics to determine the advantages and disadvantages to each
-- Create a rubric for an assignment by identifying appropriate criteria

While these experiences can increase engagement and build professional skills, they can also create challenges related to communication, accountability, and team dynamics. This faculty roundtable brings together instructors who use or are considering using team-based projects to share approaches, tools, and lessons learned to support effective student collaboration. Relevant for instructors at any stage of designing or refining group-based learning activities.

By the end of the roundtable, you will be able to:
- Recognize common challenges associated with student teams and discuss strategies for addressing them.
- Explore practical approaches that support communication, accountability, and effective collaboration.
- Identify at least one strategy, tool, or idea they could adapt for use in their own course.

One strategy is to use rubrics which communicate the standards to students and also help us provide feedback about where they need to focus future efforts. Do you know how to modify your Canvas course to support accommodation requirements? The CTL and eCampus have partnered up with the EAC to create this session in which you will learn about the most common accommodation requirements and how to design/adjust your course to meet them. You will also come away with tips on how to more effectively communicate with students who need academic accommodations, and locate resources available to you.

Several years later, some of that flexibility has remained, with educators noting both positive and negative impacts on student learning. This dichotomy leads many of us to wonder what the right balance of flexibility is. In this workshop, we will begin by exploring the demographics of Boise State students and how those might impact the choices we make. In addition, you will have the opportunity to discuss your thoughts and assumptions about course policies, review different policy models, and consider what policies best support your students' learning.
By the end of the workshop, you should be able to:
-- Summarize key demographics about Boise State students
-- Articulate your own beliefs related to attendance, late work, grading, and other course policies
-- Evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of various course policies
-- Identify policies you’d like to use to support your students’ learning, informed by your situational factors

Workshops in the Ten for Teaching series focus on essential classroom teaching skills. These workshops are aligned with the outcomes of the CTL’s Evidence-Based Teaching Certificate and support instructors in building the skills they need in order to earn the certificate.

David Hunt and Anne Hamby (Department of Marketing) about student and instructor perspectives on flexible grading policies. Drawing on college-wide survey findings, they will highlight places where student expectations and instructor perspectives aligned, and places where they diverged substantially. Together, participants will explore why these gaps emerge, what instructors have done to better communicate and design course policies, and how flexible policies can support student learning while remaining manageable and equitable. Attendees will have a chance to reflect on their own course policies and brainstorm ways to reduce expectation gaps between students and instructors.

A selection of sandwiches and salads will be available for those attending this session in person. We will have dairy and gluten free options available, as well as vegetarian/vegan food. If you have a dietary need outside of that, please let us know at least a week ahead of the session. You are also welcome to bring your own lunch/snack!

In this session, you will use your program's curriculum map to identify Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) that are supported in a specific course or courses, then explore ways of using course level assessments to provide evidence of student achievement of those PLOs. Making these connections will help you and your program identify direct measures of student learning for program-level assessment, as well as support effective assessment at the course level. By the end of this session, you will be able to:
- Use your program’s curriculum map to identify potential sources of student achievement of PLOs
- Work with colleagues to use course level assessment data for program assessment work
