Although generating a grading policy might seem like an afterthought, the decisions that we make around grading are impactful for our students and may significantly influence their experiences in our courses. In this workshop, we will begin by exploring our own grading philosophies, including what we think different grades mean, how effort should be factored in, and if all students should be able to earn an A. We will explore strategies for creating a more learning-centered approach to grading and will conclude by considering alternative grading frameworks.
By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:
-- Articulate your own philosophy around giving grades.
-- Analyze what “A” and “C” grades mean to you
-- Explain strategies for creating a more learning-centered approach to grading
-- Describe the general features of various alternative grading frameworks
