DESCRIPTION:The Intercultural Living Library (ILL) fosters cultural interes
t and brings people together in mutual respect to embrace the dignity of v
arious lived experiences. As a Service-Learning course project\, the event
promotes understanding between cultures. Similar to a local library\, vis
itors are ‘Readers’ who consider a display board of available titles\,
choose a ‘Book’ they would like to learn more about and ‘check it o
ut’ within a small group (4-5 people) setting for a limited time (20-25
min). The only difference is that at our Living Library\, Books are people
\, and reading consists of listening to individual life stories\, asking q
uestions and holding respectful dialogue. The event creates a positive fra
mework for personal conversations that contribute to greater cohesion acro
ss cultural divisions. It is a nonjudgmental place where students may lear
n about other cultures and various lived experiences. This event is a stud
ent led Service-Learning Project for an Intercultural Communication course
(COMM 351-001). Contact the instructor\, Therese Woozley at theresewoozle
 y@boisestate.edu for more information.
