Title: Hyperbolic Groups
Abstract: Geometric group theory is the study of algebraic objects such as groups, by regarding them as symmetries of geometric objects, such as metric spaces. A good choice for the metric space is the Cayley graph associated with a finite generating set. If geodesic triangles in the Cayley graph are uniformly thin we say the group is hyperbolic. Just as most surfaces are hyperbolic, and “most” 3-manifolds are hyperbolic, one can show that “most” finitely presented groups are hyperbolic. In my talk I will give a basic introduction to the theory of hyperbolic groups.
