The American Mathematical Society (AMS) Einstein Public Lecture in Mathematics is an annual invited address given by a mathematician about a compelling mathematical topic of broad appeal. These lectures began in 2005 as a centenary celebration of Albert Einstein's annus mirabilis, when he published four papers that revolutionized humanity's fundamental understanding of physics.

This year's lecture will be given by Linda Furuto, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. You do not need any special mathematics to enjoy this lecture. Here is an excerpt from the abstract: "Inspired by voyaging on land and sea, the world’s first academic program in ethnomathematics was founded at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM) by cultural practitioners, researchers, community organizers, and Dr. Furuto in 2018. The UHM Ethnomathematics Program empowers mathematics teacher leaders to be locally-minded, global citizens who engage in rigorous, relevant, and contextualized content that amplifies the voices of their students. In the presentation, Dr. Furuto will share voyaging stories, insights about mathematics that we can glean from the study of ethnomathematics, and experiences with students, teachers, and researchers who think deeply about how we can support equitable teaching and learning environments, where mathematics is a vehicle to work toward equity, empowerment, and dignity for all."
