10:30 a.m. ENGR, room 103. Patrick Highsmith, Pure Energy Minerals Ltd. will be presenting a seminar entitled “New Technology in Lithium Mining Inspired by Amazing Growth in Lithium Batteries”. Highsmith is a 30 year mining industry veteran with deep experience in many commodities, but boasting unique expertise in the lithium and gold industries. He holds degrees in geological engineering and geochemistry from the Colorado School of Mines. He has worked in more than 40 countries for mining companies large and small, founding and managing a number of companies, and co-leading transactions valued at almost $200 million. He is now the President and CEO of Pure Energy Minerals Ltd.
Lithium is the lightest of all metals, so it makes the best batteries for mobiles applications. Now that lithium batteries are safe, long-lived, and cheap, the batter world is changing forever.
The talk will summarize the battery materials supply chain and how it has responded to the rapid growth in demand for lithium batteries and electric vehicles. Lithium comes from relatively few mines employing low technology approaches to the extraction of the metal. However, interesting changes are looming as new players are gaining momentum. Lithium production methodology will be summarized so as to compare and contrast the past and the future.
The talk will also focus on Pure Energy Minerals’ Clayton Valley Project. The project neighbors North America’s only operating lithium mine. Pure Energy has proposed the use of a new technology at Clayton Valley that could dramatically improve the economics, efficiency, and environmental footprint of lithium production.
