April 29: Topology Seminar, Uwe Kaiser

3-3:50 p.m. in Math Building, Room 124

Associate math professor Uwe Kaiser will speak on “What in an alternating knot?”

“What is an alternating knot?” concerns an old question by Ralph Fox asking for a topological characterization of alternating knots without mention of diagrams. This question has recently been answered independently by Joshua Howie and Joshua Evan Greene. We will describe the two answers, some background of the problem (why is this an interesting question?) and give a few ideas of the proofs.
