Abstract: Rapid climate change can shift regional climate conditions beyond individuals’ thermal tolerances, contributing to local population declines. However, climate risk projections are often based on coarse-scale macroclimate data, which may not represent the fine-scale microclimatic conditions experienced by organisms. In forests, vegetation structure and canopy cover can strongly buffer temperature relative to surrounding macroclimate, and canopy cover loss can accelerate local warming beyond regional climate trends. Because birds are confined to nests during reproduction, they cannot readily avoid unfavorable microclimatic conditions, potentially affecting reproductive success. Despite this potential sensitivity, which has been documented in other avian species, nest microclimate remains poorly studied for forest canopy-nesting raptors. This thesis investigates the American goshawk (Astur atricapillus), a North American forest-nesting raptor whose population in the Minidoka Ranger District of the Sawtooth National Forest has experienced declining reproductive success in recent years. We aimed to evaluate the influence of nest temperature on goshawk reproductive success in the Minidoka Ranger District across 2015–2025. To address this aim, we measured goshawk nest temperature over two breeding seasons in 2024 and 2025, developed models to hindcast past years’ nest temperatures in years 2015–2023, and isolated the effects of nest temperature on goshawk hatching success and nestling survival, using models developed with directed acyclic graphs. Our thermologger-measured nest temperatures often existed within a buffered range relative to macroclimate temperature estimates, reflecting the thermal buffering capacity of forest canopies. Hindcasting nest temperature allowed us to estimate past nest conditions using models derived from measured nest temperature data specific to our study species. Average minimum nest temperature during incubation did not appear to influence hatching success in our study sample. However, during the nestling stage, nestling survival declined with warmer maximum nest temperatures. We offer the first empirical support that warmer nest temperatures may substantially limit goshawk nestling survival. Increased efforts to preserve areas of thermal refuge within goshawk breeding habitat may support reproductive success. The approach outlined in this thesis can be applied to evaluate microclimate-reproduction relationships in other forest-nesting populations.

Abstract: Global issues including life-threatening environmental hazards, accelerated depletion of fossil fuel reserves, and increased greenhouse gas emissions, water, and air pollution, have been greatly accelerated by the rapid expansion of the global economy, urbanization, and improvements in living standards. Therefore, the imperative to develop and scale up sustainable, clean energy sources, along with their associated technologies, has received the greatest importance on a global scale. In line with the goal of developing such energy conversion and storage devices, supercapacitors stand out as highly promising energy storage devices, drawing significant attention due to their distinct advantages, including high power density, high capacitive retention, high charge-discharge rates, extreme cyclic life, and reliability.

Additive manufacturing (AM) of two-dimensional materials (2DM) based devices has acquired significant attention for the developing lightweight and flexible electronic devices such as sensors and energy storage devices, with complex geometries and low processing cost. Among the various additive manufacturing methods, aerosol jet printing (AJP) has emerged as a powerful tool in electronic manufacturing. AJP is known for its non-contact, high-resolution, and mask-less capabilities, enabling the printing of a wide range of materials.

In recent years, two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as MXenes, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), and black phosphorous (BP), have dawn considerable attention as potential electrode materials for supercapacitors. These materials offer several crucial advantages for next-generation electrochemical devices. This promise is rooted in their good electronic conductivity, excellent electrochemical and mechanical properties, their abundant active sites and good chemical, electrochemical and thermal stability, since these properties are promising for energy storage application. The main goal of this project is the synthesis and development of 2DM nanomaterial inks, including MXenes and TMD alloys inks, to be compatible with aerosol jet printing (AJP) of supercapacitors while elucidating a fundamental understanding of the energy storage mechanisms in such additively fabricated devices.

Abstract: Wildfires in the western United States have become more severe and frequent in recent decades and human-caused climate change has increased the odds of extreme fire years across forested regions of the globe. Wildfire affects hillslope stability by reducing vegetation cover and making soil more water repellent. As a result, debris flows are more likely in the 1-3 years following a fire. Following the 2024 Wapiti fire in Central, Idaho fire-related debris flows have resulted in road closures, significant road damage and impacts to local communities. This project will investigate the downstream effects of these debris flows by estimating sediment volumes, grain size distributions and channel elevation profiles that will be input to a sediment routing model to identify areas along the channel network that are prone to aggradation or erosion. The model outputs will be compared to field assessments of channel stability. As wildfires continue to impact ecosystems and communities globally, the need for accurate post-fire hazard assessments is paramount.

Abstract: Framed by James Paul Gee’s concepts of discourse and discourse analysis, this dissertation explores three levels of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) discourse in higher education through a macro/meso/micro-structured article-based study. Study 1 is a literature review on faculty and student initial perceptions of GenAI in higher education from November 2022 through December 31, 2023. Study 2 is an LLM-assisted, human-in-the-loop supervised qualitative analysis that describes and establishes a permissiveness-based typology. Study 3 is a quantitative analysis of the readability of a corpus of faculty-produced policies. This dissertation helps to identify trends in how GenAI use is both perceived and addressed in syllabi. The research can be used to establish baseline metrics for continuing studies of GenAI policy. The research also offers insights into the affordances of discourse-analysis informed scholarship on GenAI. The dissertation demonstrates the need for more discourse analysis-informed study of GenAI. It also supports faculty and institutions in developing more transparent and effective guidelines for GenAI use in the classroom.

Abstract: Large earthquakes pose hazards to nearby populations through strong ground motion, liquefaction, and secondary events (e.g. tsunamis, landslides). The Queen Charlotte Fault (QCF) in Southeast Alaska is a fast-slipping transform fault that accommodates right-lateral plate motion between the Pacific and North American Plates and is one of the most seismically productive strike-slip faults on Earth. Despite its tectonic significance, the QCF remains relatively understudied compared to other major plate boundaries because of its remote location and sparse seismic instrumentation. As a result, factors known to influence earthquake magnitude, such as seismic velocity structure, seismogenic zone thickness, and lithology at the fault interface are poorly constrained. Rupture models and aftershock studies of the M7.5 Craig, AK earthquake on the QCF suggested that the maximum depth of the seismogenic zone is ~21-25 km, much deeper than is expected for either oceanic or continental lithosphere. However, the predictions made for the continental North American Plate do not account for variation of lithologies and tectonic history within the accreted terranes at the continental margin. I hypothesize that the continental margin at the QCF is more mafic than typical continental crust and mechanically strong, allowing seismic rupture to occur at greater depths than is expected in felsic crust, producing a thick seismogenic zone. Alternatively, a strong mechanical contrast across a bimaterial fault separating mafic and felsic crust may allow deeper seismogenic slip. To test this hypothesis, I propose an integrated local earthquake catalog and seismic tomography study to determine the seismogenic zone thickness at the central QCF and the geologic nature of the fault-bounding lithosphere. Improved constraints on crustal seismic velocities and the seismogenic zone thickness will improve accuracy of seismic hazard assessments in Southeast Alaska.

Abstract: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a diagnosis increasingly applied to college students. Many students will receive such a diagnosis in elementary or secondary education, but some may not be diagnosed until they enter college, a time of increased challenges and decreased support from parents and others, such as school counselors. College students with ADHD experience a wide range of difficulties such as inattention and procrastination, and they often lack skills related to executive functioning, self-regulation, organization, planning, and time management. As ADHD is primarily diagnosed during childhood and adolescence, the majority of research, treatments, and educational technologies developed for this condition have been focused on this demographic. However, they are not designed to address the self-direction and independence of the college student. The goal of this research is to increase the understanding of the situation of college students with ADHD and their use of supportive services and technology. Through a better understanding of the quantitative data available and the patterns related to the use of supportive services, it may be possible to inform policymakers, academic advisors, and educators in their efforts to develop and refine supports aimed at improving academic persistence and success. Additionally, through a better understanding of the traits and strengths of college students with ADHD, it may be possible to identify applications or supportive technologies that might better align with the academic needs and strengths of these students. Results identified that 69.7% of college students who self-report having ADHD also report a co-occurring psychological disorder. These students identified as using both the disability resource center and psychological services more than students who did not identify as having ADHD. However, the majority of students reported not engaging in formal accommodations and supportive services in higher education. Results indicate that experiences related to discrimination based on having ADHD, student perceptions of inadequate support from instructors, and students’ feelings of being overwhelmed may relate to the lack of engagement with supportive services in college. Analysis also identified a small relationship between computer courses completed in high school and intellectual self-confidence in college for students with ADHD. The results support the formulation of orientation and training programs for college students on the benefits of using supportive services, engaging in self-advocacy behaviors, and incorporating the positive aspects of ADHD into their identity to improve academic persistence and success in college.

Abstract: Accurate modeling of molecular and materials systems requires methods that balance physical accuracy with computational efficiency. While high-precision approaches such as explicit-solvent thermodynamic integration (TI) for solvation and density functional theory (DFT) for atomistic materials modeling offer reliable reference data, their computational expense limits their use across broad chemical and compositional spaces. This dissertation develops data-driven strategies that combine physics-based simulations with machine learning to enable accurate predictions where direct high-fidelity simulation is computationally unfeasible.
A benchmark-quality solvation free energy dataset is created by combining explicit-solvent TI calculations with continuum solvation calculations using Environ. The dataset includes a curated subset of neutral molecules used for validation against published TI reference values and experimental data, as well as an expanded IUPAC-based collection of 8,055 molecules, including ionic species. Continuum solvation predictions capture overall trends but exhibit structured, molecule-dependent deviations compared to TI.
To address these discrepancies, a neural network correction framework is developed that uses atom-centered descriptors from the continuum calculations, including features related to cavity geometry, dielectric response, and angular power spectra. The model learns the systematic error of the continuum approach and offers corrected predictions that maintain computational efficiency while improving agreement with explicit-solvent reference data. Careful dataset stratification ensures reliable evaluation across molecular sizes and energy ranges.
The same data-driven approach is extended to materials modeling by creating a machine-learned interatomic potential for Co-P bulk metallic glasses. An equivariant message-passing model is trained on DFT-labeled configurations across a broad range of compositions and temperatures. A dynamic validation protocol is introduced to assess model reliability during molecular dynamics trajectories and across compositions, demonstrating stable and accurate performance under dynamical sampling. Large-scale simulations using this model reveal a composition window for glass formation, with intermediate phosphorus concentrations showing structural signs of amorphous order.
Overall, this work demonstrates that physics-based models combined with data-driven correction and validation can broaden the scope of high-fidelity simulations. In solvation, this enables accurate prediction across functional groups, neutral and charged compounds, and molecules of various sizes. In materials modeling, it allows reliable atomistic simulations across compositions and temperatures that would be otherwise computationally inaccessible. These findings show how machine learning can enhance and expand simulation-based methods for both molecular and materials systems.

Abstract: It is widely acknowledged that large-scale forest disturbance events have a measurable impact on the geomorphic processes operating within forested watersheds, but the degree and patterns of that influence from a given disturbance event remain under-constrained. Similarly, there is a need to better quantify differences in geomorphic impact between disturbance event types. Given that such events may have multitudinous effects, including elevated wood loading and sediment supply, that can exert a substantial influence on the morphology and function of rivers and streams, better understanding of the degree to which forest disturbances drive increases in the rates and extent of various geomorphic processes is necessary to predict stream response following disturbance. Here, we quantify these particulars for three different forest disturbance mechanisms – snow avalanches, blowdown, and fire. Snow avalanches appear to substantially increase wood loading to mountain streams over background (80~500%) and result in characteristic in-stream jam morphologies unique to this mechanism, with morphology type dependent upon several topographic and forest characteristics. Similarly, blowdown appears to significantly increase in-stream wood loads. Fire, on the other hand, likely increases wood loading at the watershed-scale, but reach scale impacts may be mitigated by local characteristics including valley morphology and burn severity. Together, a majority of wood supplied by these mechanisms has an observable geomorphic impact at the reach- to watershed-scale, suggesting that wood supply is a notable mechanistic pathway via which large disturbance events may influence stream morphology. Beyond wood dynamics, fire appears to measurably increase the probability of debris flow occurrence within high-elevation, high-relief basins, but may have a muted impact on debris flow likelihood elsewhere. Overall, results will help to inform recovery-focused management decisions such as wood addition to streams following disturbance and provide managers and decision makers with improved perspective regarding post-disturbance stream trajectories.

Bio: John is a fluvial geomorphologist and watershed scientist who studies the transport of material – water, sediment, wood, nutrients, etc. – through river basins to understand how river landscapes act, react, and evolve as connected networks of processes. His research primarily uses field-based measurements and sampling in conjunction with statistical & machine learning techniques to understand how watersheds are connected across time and space. John received a PhD from the Department of Geosciences at Colorado State University, where his research focused on understanding linkages between sediment dynamics and riparian vegetation establishment in large river basins. Prior his doctoral studies, John obtained an MS in Environmental Engineering from the University of Maryland Baltimore County and a BS in Geology from the University of Maryland and. Both his undergraduate and MS research focused on understanding sediment transport in urban watersheds. John is currently a Research Scientist in the Department of Watershed Sciences at Utah State University and an incoming Assistant Professor (starting this fall) in the Department of Geosciences at Idaho State University. Outside of research John enjoys skiing, writing, spending time with his cats, and soft-serve vanilla ice cream.

Tyler Shultz was 22 years old, fresh out of college, and eager to join a company that was being touted as “the Apple of healthcare.” He quickly realized, however, that behind the facade of a charismatic founder, powerful board, high-profile investors, and magazine cover stories, Theranos was built on lies.

Abstract: Simulation professionals juggle numerous roles in order to implement high quality simulation experiences for nursing students. This study sought to explore the intricate lived experiences of simulation professionals within academic nursing programs, delving into their multifaceted roles, challenges and benefits of the role, and the unique dynamics of their positions. A qualitative interpretative phenomenological approach was taken, with data collection using 1:1 interviews and data analysis resulting in identification of relevant themes. The study provided insight that can assist new simulation professionals to better fulfill their role as well as understanding about the role to other nursing faculty, support staff, and administration.

Abstract: Around the world, groundwater depletion due to overpumping threatens water resources, agricultural production, and ecosystem stability. Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR), which diverts surface water from rivers or reservoirs to basins or wells to help restore aquifer levels. Understanding hydrologic processes and the site conditions is critical to achieve efficient recharge. In the past, most related research was done on alluvial or sedimentary aquifers. For aquifers with complex geological conditions, little work has been done to improve the understanding of the processes underlying managed recharge. In particular, very few studies have focused on basalt aquifers, even though basalt makes up much of the Columbia River and Snake River Plains. The objective of this study is to understand how geologic structures control subsurface water-flow pathways in fractured basalt aquifers under managed aquifer recharge conditions. The Wilson Canyon Recharge Site on fractured basalt in Southern Idaho is selected here. Both geophysical and hydrological methods will be used to characterize the fractured basalt aquifer under recharged condition. Field geophysical work includes electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), seismic surveys, magnetic surveys, and transient electromagnetic surveys. In addition, water-level data from monitoring wells and the recharge basin will be used to estimate directional flow properties in the aquifer. The geophysical results will be integrated to generate a conceptual model for the subsurface structure of the recharge site. The hydrological influence of the estimated structures will be analyzed. In particular, its influence on groundwater levels under recharge conditions will be calculated, and the results will be compared with field-measured groundwater levels. A combination of geophysical and hydrologic data analysis in this study will inform improved groundwater recharge management by demonstrating groundwater flow dynamics in fractured rock aquifers.

Abstract

Typical cross-validation efforts (e.g. leave-one-observation-out, k-fold) assume the observations to be predicted arise from independent observations. When observations are not independent, and correlation exists among some of the observations, prediction error estimates are biased downward. This is because correlation among observations means that information about the held-out observations is present in the training data. Leaving out the entire cluster eliminates this data leakage, but this can increase the cross-validation prediction error when predictors for the held-out cluster are poorly represented in the training data. This synthesis considers primarily block-clustered data in a frequentist setting, with papers by Roberts (2017) providing an overview, Rabinowicz and Rosset (2022) who provide a bias-correction to the cross-validation prediction error for squared-error loss in the presence of clustered data, Yuval and Rosset (2025) who extend this to additional loss functions for binary classifications, and Takada et al. (2021) where methods from meta-analysis are used for a leave-one-cluster-out analysis. All of these papers either state, or implicitly require, a prediction goal that drives the methodology. They also operate under the matching marginals assumption, which occurs when the prediction target has the same random effects distribution as the training data. When this condition is met, standard cross-validation may be unbiased, at least for squared-error loss and potentially binary classification applications. The paucity of knowledge regarding whether cluster-aware models are required for good prediction, and the statistical properties for leave-one-cluster-out prediction error, offer opportunities for further research.

Abstract: Snow cover strongly modulates the amplitude and spectral content of infrasound recorded in snow-covered environments. Using howitzer avalanche mitigation detonations as repeatable impulsive sources in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah, we examine spatial and temporal variations in recorded infrasonic signals. We develop an automated explosion picker constrained by expected acoustic time-of-flight, azimuth migration, and deviations in peak signal amplitude relative to event averages to construct a catalog of 151 identified artillery ordinance detonations across 71 known target locations. Infrasonic waveforms recorded by two ground-based sensor arrays are analyzed over a 15-day period during the late 2022–2023 winter season and compared with snow depth measurements from a nearby SNOTEL station. Results show that sensor-specific attenuation and spectral filtering occurs at scales less than 30 meters when sensors are buried by 2+ meters of snow. We speculate that snowpack heterogeneity can obscure true source characteristics and location accuracy over small spatial scales. Consequently, amplitude-based interpretations from individual buried microphones may misrepresent explosive yield or source intensity if snow-mediated site effects are not considered. Wind and temperature effects on acoustic time-of-flight contribute additional signal variability, though their influence cannot be fully resolved due to limited meteorological data. Furthermore, we demonstrate that dynamic snowpack conditions exert first-order control on infrasonic observations and provide recommendations therein to mitigate the influence of snow on recorded infrasound.

Abstract:
Halide perovskites are a class of semiconductors with exceptional optoelectronic properties and vexing degradation modes. I started researching these materials at Boise State in 2016 with the help of Rick Ubic, Elton Graugnard, and Claire Xiong. Since then, halide perovskites have flourished and unforeseen applications have emerged.
Deep underground, our team is exploring perovskites as detectors for exotic particles (primarily neutrinos, potentially dark matter).
On Earth’s surface, there are megawatt-scale perovskite solar installations, and most solar manufacturers have perovskites on their roadmap. Other applications include radiation detection (medical imaging, gamma spectroscopy). In one of my new projects with DARPA, we are also developing radiovoltaics (“nuclear batteries”).
In space, perovskites can provide scalable electric power for the era of satellite constellations. Our team designed and deployed the world’s first durable perovskite cells in low Earth orbit. McKinsey forecasts the space economy will be valued at $1.8T in 2035.
We examine how this range of applications is underpinned by the unique defect physics of halide perovskites; these arise from their band structure and weak ionic bonding. While the performance of these materials shines, deployment has been constrained by durability. We compare the trajectory of perovskite devices with Li-ion batteries and organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). These devices were once too fragile for commercialization, but their underlying properties had unique economic value. Scientists and engineers have improved the lifetime of these devices by 1,000-10,000x since their inception, and now Li-ion batteries and OLED’s command global revenues of ~$200B/year.

Kelly Schutt is a staff scientist at the National Laboratory of the Rockies in Golden, CO. He holds a Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics from the University of Oxford, where he studied as a Marshall Scholar, and a B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Boise State University. His recent work combines AI and robotics to accelerate perovskite device fabrication and characterization. When he’s not in the lab, he likes to spend time with his family and escaping to the mountains for snowboarding and backpacking.

As a testament to the flexibility of the saxophone quartet, Kenari was featured artist at the 86th Annual Baldwin Wallace Conservatory Bach Festival. Here, they collaborated with performance and academic faculty, as well as student musicians to present an unprecedented residency that explored the influence of baroque music on the late composer David Maslanka and improvisation throughout musical history. The quartet has also participated in collaborations with other artists, including the Imani Winds and WindSync. Advocating passionately for the continued growth of the saxophone quartet repertoire, the quartet has given world premieres of new works by Mischa Zupko, Joel Love, and David Salleras. The Kenari Quartet was awarded Chamber Music America’s Classical Commissioning Grant, which facilitated the creation of the… of my… are an…, a work from Corey Dundee, the group’s tenor saxophonist. This project was made possible by the Andrew. W. Mellon Foundation, The Aaron Copland Fund for Music, and the Chamber Music America Endowment Fund.

Kenari’s Boise program features serious 21st-century works for saxophone quartet by John Mackey (Unquiet Spirits), Joel Love, and Viet Cuong—all in deeply expressive, diverse styles and all Boise premieres—and a light and lively virtuoso four-movement work by French neoclassicist Pierre Max Dubois, his Quartet for Saxophones in F from 1962. The concert concludes with David Maslanka’s transcendent tour de force, “The Soul Is Here for Its Own Joy.”

Abstract: DNA nanotechnology exploits the programmable base-pairing properties of DNA to assemble nanoscale structures with precise spatial organization. Among these approaches, DNA origami enables the folding of a long single-stranded DNA scaffold into user-defined shapes through hundreds of short staple strands. This design strategy has enabled applications across nanotechnology, including molecular sensing, nanoscale fabrication, and emerging DNA-based information storage systems. One such system, digital nucleic acid memory (dNAM), encodes information through spatial patterns on DNA origami structures that can be read using super-resolution microscopy. However, most DNA origami designs rely on scaffold sequences derived from the M13 bacteriophage genome, limiting scaffold diversity and constraining systems that require multiple independently folding DNA origami structures. This work explores the development of orthogonal DNA origami scaffolds to expand scaffold diversity and support scalable implementations of DNA origami-based technologies. Specifically, we evaluate evaluate custom, randomly generated, DNA scaffolds generated using ScaffoldSmith and investigate whether these sequences can function as orthogonal scaffolds during DNA origami assembly. A set of three ~11 kb scaffolds with low sequence similarity were synthesized and used to assemble DNA origami structures compatible with dNAM architectures. Folding experiments performed in the presence of competing staple sets demonstrated robust origami assembly without statistically significant loss of yield or structural quality, indicating functional orthogonality among the tested scaffolds. These results demonstrate that computationally generated scaffolds can support reliable DNA origami folding while minimizing unintended interactions between structures. Overall, this work establishes an experimental foundation for expanding libraries of orthogonal DNA origami scaffolds. Such scaffold libraries may enable parallel synthesis of multiple DNA origami structures and support the development of scalable DNA nanotechnology systems, including future implementations of dNAM.

Program: Biomedical Engineering PhD

Abstract: Ligaments and tendons undergo structural remodeling and repair when exposed to mechanical loads. While multiple studies have investigated this phenomenon by applying stress or strain to cell-seeded scaffolds, the physical mechanisms that regulate cell responses to any loading configuration and drive structural and functional improvements of the tissue remain unclear. This gap hinders the development of effective therapeutic strategies for ligament and tendon injuries, which affect about 12 million U.S. citizens. This work introduces a novel approach to stimulating 3D cell-seeded constructs based on strain energy, a scalar quantity that combines stress and strain. Using this approach, we applied cyclic loads to 3D fibroblast-seeded collagen scaffolds in different loading configurations and evaluated changes in functional and structural properties across loading types. We also examined the ability of different mechanical measures (stress, strain, energy) to predict remodeling behaviors in the constructs. Findings revealed that distortion energy, a measure of shape change, was the best predictor of changes in cell density, tissue stiffness, and some protein expression and synthesis across various loading modes. This suggests that distortion energy may be a key physical driver of soft tissue remodeling during healthy activity and during healing.

Series Description

Hunting has long occupied a central place in art history—not only in natural history illustrations, grand paintings of human–animal combat, popular prints, and other visual media, but also as the impetus for a wide range of material culture. It produced artifacts as varied as hunting horns, trophies, horse tack, taxidermy, furniture, and fashion. As both a subject of artistic representation and a material practice, hunting offers a compelling lens through which to consider how human intervention shaped attitudes toward the environment, constructed gender roles, and reinforced social hierarchies. Images of the hunt—often defined by direct and violent incursions into nature—came to embody humanity’s presumed dominion over the natural world. To examine these works critically is to gain insight into the historical entanglement of humans and their environment, and into the role of that relationship in shaping cultural and historical identities. Supported by Humanities and Social Studies Initiative (HSSI).

About the Speaker

Priyani Roy Choudhury is an independent research scholar based in New Delhi, specializing in Mughal art and architecture. She has been a Visiting Faculty at the School of Arts and Aesthetics, JNU. Between 2013-16, she was a doctoral fellow at the Museum of Islamic Arts (The Museum für Islamische Kunst) in Berlin. Her ongoing research project on Fatehpur Sikri is a close engagement with the visual language of the imperial city as it unfolds through its architecture, spatial arrangement, and ornamental design. She has also actively engaged with painting traditions from the 14th-19th centuries, studying the connections between the aesthetic practices of South Asia and those of Central Asia, Iran, Western China, the Indian Ocean littoral, as well as Europe.

Program: Materials Science and Engineering PhD

Abstract:

Pulsed electric field (PEF) technology is a non-thermal processing method that modifies biological materials through electrically induced microstructural changes. This work evaluates PEF as a scalable processing tool by linking structure, property, and process relationships in potato chip production and barley malting. In potato tissues, PEF induces electroporation, resulting in structural softening through loss of turgor pressure and membrane disruption, which enhances heat and mass transfer during frying. These changes reduced frying time by 10%, oil uptake by 8%, reducing sugars by 19.2%, asparagine by 42.0%, and acrylamide by 28.9% in Lamoka potato chips. In Covington sweet potato kettle chips, oil content decreased from 46.3% to 37.8%, and acrylamide levels were reduced by 44.6%.

PEF application to Voyager barley at industrially relevant conditions (45 kJ/kg, 1 kV/cm) resulted in a substantial reduction in microbial load, decreasing aerobic plate counts from approximately 5,800 kCFU/g to 260 kCFU/g. This reduction likely improved germination efficiency by reducing microbial competition for oxygen and nutrients. Malting performance indicators, including α-amylase activity, β-glucan, free amino nitrogen (FAN), and soluble sugars, demonstrated accelerated biochemical modification consistent with enhanced enzymatic accessibility and endosperm degradation.

This work establishes that PEF-driven process improvements arise from tissue-dependent mechanisms, with electroporation governing responses in parenchymal plant tissues (e.g., potato tubers) and microbial suppression dominating in grain systems. By explicitly connecting structure–property–process relationships, this research provides a materials-based framework for scaling PEF across diverse biological material processing applications.

As a science of public health, the integration of such research would also aid in identifying and examining population patterns and distributions where stigma plays a role. This study investigates the integration of stigma research in epidemiology and within the specific subject-matter context of autism, non-suicidal self-injury, and help-seeking. The literature from PubMed, ProQuest, and Scopus is examined in this scoping review using the PRISMA-ScR framework. A total of 2,980 records were identified as meeting the search criteria (excluding duplicates). Following title and abstract screening, 141 records remained and underwent full-text screening, with two articles included in the rapid scoping review for meeting all search criteria. These limited results demonstrate that research integrating stigma in epidemiological studies in the narrowed context of autism, non-suicidal self-injury, and help-seeking is significantly lacking. Furthermore, qualitatively assessing these results offers limited opportunities to evaluate or investigate epidemiology’s commonly used definitions of stigma, differences between macro- and micro-level research, or the contributions to stigma research as it relates to population distributions and determinants of health. Finding this gap in the literature indicates an opportunity for future study designs and for researchers to integrate stigma research into epidemiology, providing additional insights into population studies and health outcomes.

Title: Molecular Machines in Motion: Using Transient Kinetics to Advance Antiviral and Gene Therapies

Abstract: Understanding the molecular mechanisms governing nucleic acid polymerases and mobile genetic elements is essential for the development of next-generation antiviral therapies and precise gene-delivery technologies. This seminar will explore how transient kinetic analysis and other biochemical techniques allow us to resolve the discrete mechanistic steps underlying viral RNA synthesis and retrotransposon-mediated gene insertion.
First, I will discuss studies on the SARS-CoV-2 RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp). By quantifying the kinetic "decision-making" of the enzyme, we reveal that RdRp is highly processive and unexpectedly incorporates the antiviral drug Remdesivir more efficiently than its natural substrate, ATP. I will share structural and kinetic evidence showing how this incorporation stalls the RdRp complex by blocking RNA translocation, providing a blueprint for the design of more potent nucleotide analogs.
In the second half of the talk, I will present the first comprehensive mechanistic framework for R2 non-long terminal repeat (non-LTR) retrotransposition. Using a combination of kinetic and biochemical approaches, we have defined the pathway from initial target site recognition to final gene integration. These findings not only offer deep mechanistic insights into a promising gene therapy platform but also establish the fundamental weak points for engineering retrotransposon systems capable of safe, site-specific genome insertion.

Immerse yourself in the language and step through a cinematic portal to new continents. Hosted on the Boise State campus, this three-week festival offers more than just movies. Each screening features a faculty guest speaker from a variety of disciplines, followed by an optional community discussion. Thanks to a generous grant from the Villa Albertine Foundation, our lineup has evolved. This year, the BFFF will screen six critically acclaimed films, ranging from iconic New Wave classics to contemporary action. There is truly something for everyone.

All screenings are FREE and open to the public.

Abstract: This thesis examines the relationship between suicide mortality and adjusted median
household income (AMHI) among known residents in Ada County, Idaho, from 2017
through 2023, with particular focus on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Suicide
data was collected from the Ada County Coroner’s Office, and income data was
obtained from the United States Census Bureau and American Community Survey
across fifteen selected ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs). The study timeframe was
grouped into three COVID-19-related periods: pre-COVID (2017-2019), COVID (2020-
2021), and post-COVID (2022-2023). A chi-square test and Poisson mixed-effects
model were used to assess changes in suicide mortality across periods, while a linear
mixed-effects model was used to evaluate the relationship between AMHI and suicide
rates between COVID-19 periods. Results showed a significant difference in suicide
mortality across periods, with fewer suicides than expected during the COVID period
and more than expected during the post-COVID period. Further analysis indicated that
the transition from the COVID period to the post-COVID period was the primary driver of
this significant difference. The linear mixed-effects results show that AMHI was only
significantly associated with suicide rates during the COVID period. These findings
suggest that suicide mortality changed across COVID-19 periods in Ada County, with
the most significant shift occurring from the COVID period to the post-COVID period.
They also show that AMHI was only a significant variable during the COVID period with
higher income ZCTAs experienced lower rates of suicides compared to lower income
ZCTAs.

Sunil Amrith twins the stories of environment and empire, of genocide and eco-cide, of an extraordinary expansion of human freedom and its planetary costs. Drawing on an extraordinarily rich diversity of primary sources, he reckons with the ruins of Portuguese silver mining in Peru, British gold mining in South Africa, and oil extraction in Central Asia. He explores the railroads and highways that brought humans to new terrains of battle against each other and against stubborn nature. Amrith’s account of the ways in which the First and Second World Wars involved the massive mobilization not only of men, but of other natural resources from around the globe, provides an essential new way of understanding war as an irreversible reshaping of the planet. So, too, does his book reveal the reality of migration as a consequence of environmental harm. The imperial, globe-spanning pursuit of profit, joined with new forms of energy and new possibilities of freedom from hunger and discomfort, freedom to move and explore, has brought change to every inch of the Earth.

Sunil Amrith is the Renu and Anand Dhawan Professor of History and Vice Provost for International Affairs at Yale University. Amrith’s research focuses on the movements of people and the ecological processes that have connected South and Southeast Asia, and has expanded to encompass global environmental history. Amrith is the recipient of many prizes including a MacArthur Fellowship and the Infosys Prize in Humanities. Amrith’s new book,The Burning Earth, is an environmental history of the modern world that foregrounds the experiences of the Global South. It was named a 2024 “essential read” by The New Yorker, a “book we love” 2024 by NPR, and was a finalist for the 2025 PEN/E.O. Wilson prize. It is being translated into ten languages.

The goal of the The Idea of Nature lecture series is to promote interdisciplinary inquiry about the environment and to foster dialogue across the campus and community. Dr. Samantha Harvey founded The Idea of Nature in 2012. She joined the faculty of the Department of English Literature at Boise State University in 2010. She received her Ph.D. from Cambridge University in English Literature and her B.A. in English and the Study of Religion from Harvard University. Dr. Harvey's teaching and research interests include nineteenth-century British poetry and prose, transatlantic Romanticism, and literature and the environment.

Abstract: Digital technology has reshaped music education, transforming how teachers instruct and students learn, practice, and create. Grounded in the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), this study employed an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design to examine private instrumental teachers' perceptions of mobile applications. In phase one, 156 members of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) completed a Qualtrics survey measuring perceived usefulness (PU), ease of use (PEOU), and attitudes (AT) toward mobile apps for instruction and independent practice. Ten participants were purposively selected for the qualitative interviews in phase two. In phase three, quantitative and qualitative results were integrated. Quantitative findings reveal strongly positive perceptions across all TAM dimensions, while four themes: 1) Mobile Applications as Concept or Skills Reinforcers, 2) Mobile Applications as Independent Practice Facilitators, 3) Mobile Applications as Independent Practice Motivation Support, and 4) Mobile applications as Enablers of Self-regulation During Independent Practice, emerged from the qualitative data to contextualize the uses of mobile applications for private music lessons. Despite broadly positive perceptions across all TAM dimensions, participants remained less convinced that apps could improve the quality or quantity of students’ independent practice. Findings offer implications for private instrumental teachers seeking to align apps with pedagogical objectives, and for developers aiming to better support the quality and quantity of students’ independent practice.

The concert also features works by Mahler, Pärt, Ešenvalds, Hawes, Ramsey, and Guillaume. These pieces delve into the struggle between light and darkness, expressing lament, the fight against evil, the longing for protection, and the persistence of hope in the face of darkness.

Abstract

Industrial control systems (ICS) produce multivariate time-series data in which attacks may be subtle and temporally structured. Data-driven anomaly detectors can achieve high recall but often generate excessive false alarms and provide limited interpretability. We propose an actuator-triggered temporal-logic monitoring framework that moves from correlation-based deviations to causality-oriented “physics witnesses.” Using normal-operation data, we automatically infer actuator–process relationships from post-toggle response signatures and synthesize Differential Temporal Logic (DTL) rules capturing expected control–response behavior, including no-response-after-toggle constraints and state-conditioned invariants. Rule parameters are calibrated via robust, normal-only quantiles and combined using persistence and 𝑚-of-𝑛 voting to control alert rates. Evaluated on the Secure Water Treatment (SWaT) dataset, the proposed witnesses yield interpretable evidence and reduce false alarms while maintaining timely detection of attack episodes.

Join us for The Cosmos Sings, a powerful program performed by Boise State University Choirs and Symphony Orchestra—music shaped by the wonder of the universe, from the grandeur of creation to the quiet refuge of the inner world. This concert will also feature the winner of the 2026 Concerto-Aria Competition.

The evening opens with Part I of Haydn’s Creation, a choral and orchestral masterpiece that vividly depicts the dawn of the world—light, sky, sea, and stars bursting into being. In response to this oratorio, we offer Dan Forrest’s i thank You God for most this amazing day, a radiant setting of e.e. cummings’ poem that celebrates the joy and reverence of simply being alive within such a magnificent creation. The journey concludes with a choral arrangement of Mahler’s Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen, a hauntingly beautiful meditation on retreating from the turmoil of the external world to find peace in the sanctuary of the human soul.

Abstract: Conflict-resolution methods in prefigurative social movements have not been explored in depth. The aim of this action-research-based ethnography is to identify the current practice of conflict resolution in Trans Justice Idaho (TJI, pseudonym), a prefigurative organization based in Idaho, how individuals surrounding the organization respond to these conflicts, and how this response contributes to their decisions to associate with the organization. Another goal is to identify individual preferences for conflict resolution in two hypothetical events of organized disruption at a TJI-organized event. I employed in-depth interviews and participant observations to achieve this. Results indicate that the physical or online presence of organizers and the ability of organizers to take accountability for one’s own actions may contribute to more positive reactions among individual community members. This same presence, as well as experience, training, and personal attitudes, contributes to individual preferences for conflict-resolution methods in the hypotheticals presented to study participants.Finding clear delineations between conflict resolution methods presents a key tension in this study that future research should address by either embracing complexity or employing more robust conceptual frameworks of conflict resolution.

This spring, The Resilience Institute invites you to an evening of connection, collaboration, and shared purpose.

Community, state, regional, and Boise State leaders will gather to strengthen partnerships and shape the next chapter of resilience across Idaho and the West. Together, we will explore how research, practice, and leadership come together to build communities prepared for change, adaptive in the face of uncertainty, and built to endure.

The evening will feature keynote speaker Kelly Burns, Emergency Manager for the City of Ashland and Incident Commander during the Almeda Fire, who will share how that devastating wildfire reshaped strategy in the Rogue Valley and how our partnership is advancing cutting-edge wildfire evacuation modeling and education.

This gathering marks an important moment for the Institute as we look ahead and invest in resilience that endures.

Planting seedlings

Sewing native seeds

Constructing split-rail fences

Installing signage

Picking up litter

Our goal is to gather a team of about 15 volunteers for each workday. Whether you can help once or on a recurring basis, we would love your support!

This month’s topic: Built for the Climb: Resilience, Risk, and Starting Something Hard

Hear from Braydon Bringhurst, Founder & Professional Athlete, Hard MTB League, and Adam Pishl, Anchor Investor & Partner, Hard MTB League.

Braydon Bringhurst is a professional mountain bike athlete, mental performance coach, and founder of Hard MTB League. A USASA National Freeski Champion and Olympic Training Center coach, he earned All-American honors as a Division I pole vaulter at BYU before completing his Boise State MBA. Today, he works with athletes and entrepreneurs to develop psychological tools for peak performance—teaching others to embrace discomfort, manage fear, and unlock potential through deliberate mental training.

Adam Pishl co-founded and led a multi-billion-dollar publicly traded renewable energy company before transitioning to Vice Chair of the Board. A Boise State MBA graduate, he brings decades of experience scaling businesses and building high-performance cultures in high-stakes industries. As anchor investor and partner in Hard MTB League, Adam applies mental performance principles to leadership, resilience, and turning bold vision into reality.

Conversation topics will include:

Building resilience in high-pressure environmentsThe psychology of risk-taking and embracing discomfortTranslating elite athletic mindset into business leadershipScaling a vision: from startup idea to professional leagueMental performance strategies for entrepreneurs and professionalsLessons learned from failure, setbacks, and persistence
​​​​​​​The presentation lasts about 30 minutes, followed by time for questions and casual conversation. Expect something more like a TED Talk: approachable, engaging and designed to spark curiosity.

Tapped Minds is open to alumni, students, faculty, staff and community members, and there is no cost to attend. An RSVP is encouraged to help with planning, but walk-ins are always welcome.

Abstract: Inverse problems arise across the geosciences whenever unknown states or parameters must be estimated from indirect, sparse, or noisy observations. This dissertation develops and analyzes regularization strategies for two classes of such problems: variational data assimilation and neural network-based geophysical inversion.
In the first part, we formulate weak constraint four-dimensional variational (4D-Var) data assimilation as a regularized inverse problem, where the inverse model error covariance serves as the regularization matrix. Using the representer method to reduce the problem from state space to data space, we derive efficient matrix expressions for three regularization parameter selection techniques (the L-curve, generalized cross-validation (GCV), and the ?² method) and apply them to estimate hyperparameters for both isotropic and nonisotropic model error covariances. Numerical experiments simulating wildfire smoke PM2.5 transport demonstrate that these methods reliably identify whether model predictions or observational data should be trusted more, and that nonisotropic covariance structures offer improved accuracy in data-dominated regimes.
In the second part, we investigate physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) as a framework for geophysical inversion, examining how prior choice, covariance structure, and physics-based loss terms shape inversion results across one- and two-dimensional problems including gravity inversion and seismic tomography. Comparisons against classical baselines reveal that regularization in neural network inversion arises from two complementary sources: the structure of the prior and the network architecture itself. Physics-informed loss terms provide meaningful but bounded improvements.
Together, these contributions advance the principled integration of regularization theory into modern computational frameworks for geophysical estimation.

Robin Wall Kimmerer is a mother, scientist, decorated professor, and enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. She is the author of The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants, which has earned Kimmerer wide acclaim. Her first book, Gathering Moss: A Natural and Cultural History of Mosses, was awarded the John Burroughs Medal for outstanding nature writing, and her other work has appeared in Orion, Whole Terrain, and numerous scientific journals. In 2022, Braiding Sweetgrass was adapted for young adults by Monique Gray Smith. This new edition reinforces how wider ecological understanding stems from listening to the earth’s oldest teachers: the plants around us.

Robin tours widely and has been featured on NPR’s On Being with Krista Tippett and in 2015 addressed the general assembly of the United Nations on the topic of “Healing Our Relationship with Nature.” Kimmerer is a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of Environmental Biology, and the founder and director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment, whose mission is to create programs which draw on the wisdom of both indigenous and scientific knowledge for our shared goals of sustainability. In 2022 she was named a MacArthur Fellow.

As a writer and a scientist, her interests in restoration include not only restoration of ecological communities, but restoration of our relationships to land. She holds a BS in Botany from SUNY ESF, an MS and PhD in Botany from the University of Wisconsin and is the author of numerous scientific papers on plant ecology, bryophyte ecology, traditional knowledge and restoration ecology.

Program: Biomedical Engineering PhD

Abstract: The repetitive wear-and-tear of knee menisci plays a significant role in chronic knee pain and disability, yet little is understood about the mechanical factors that drive the pathomechanics of this degenerative process. This gap in knowledge is critical to developing strategies to prevent and delay the incidence of meniscal degeneration. To address this gap, this research examines how specific loading magnitudes and motion paths at the cartilage-meniscus interface influence meniscal wear behavior, including: material loss, extracellular matrix weakening, and fiber fraying. This body of work integrates highly-repeatable, novel 3D scanning techniques to quantify and visualize meniscus damage, while mechanical wear was simulated using custom-built pin-on-plate devices and a six-degree-of-freedom robotic joint simulator. Results demonstrate that meniscal wear is anisotropic and strongly influenced by compressive loading magnitude. These findings underscore the importance of joint loading environments on meniscal health and degeneration. Collectively, this work advances the understanding of meniscal pathomechanics and identifies key mechanical factors that can inform joint-preservation strategies to improve long-term knee health.
