Abstract: Riverine landscapes are increasingly modified through projects that include the creation of new aquatic habitats, such as engineered side channels, to enhance ecological diversity and complexity within larger river systems. However, the initial biological succession and development of these human-created lotic ecosystems are not well documented. This study investigated the first two years of habitat formation and invertebrate colonization within a newly engineered side channel of the Boise River, Idaho. I compared the establishment of invertebrate communities, key energy sources (periphyton and detritus), and substrate composition in the constructed channel to the adjacent main Boise River, which served as the primary source of colonists and a reference for ecological development. Seasonal samples of invertebrates, periphyton, benthic organic matter, and substrate were collected from multiple sites in both the channel and river for two years post-channel inundation.

My findings revealed that the engineered channel rapidly developed distinct characteristics. Substrate in the channel was finer than the cobble-dominated river, a difference likely due to inputs from bank erosion and the channel's design. Detrital concentrations in the channel quickly became comparable to the river, whereas periphyton abundance was initially higher in the channel before declining to levels similar to the river by the second year. Invertebrate communities in the channel achieved richness and density levels similar to the main river within the two-year study period, although total biomass remained lower. Functional feeding group structure in the channel largely mirrored the source river community, whereas invertebrate habitat preferences in the constructed channel diverged with the source river over time. Specifically, the channel supported a higher proportion of invertebrates adapted to depositional environments. Invertebrate richness, density, and biomass increased with detritus in both the channel and the source river, whereas periphyton showed a negative association. Julian date (time) did not have a clear effect on the invertebrate community after accounting for periphyton and detrital energy sources.

My research suggests that engineered side channels can quickly support diverse invertebrate assemblages, comparable in some respects to established riverine habitats, fueled by the rapid establishment and utilization of detrital resources. However, the development of unique substrate conditions and shifts in invertebrate habitat use indicate a distinct early successional trajectory. These insights underscore the importance of detrital pathways and predictable substrate composition in the early development of newly created stream ecosystems. Observing and characterizing these initial colonization dynamics and driving factors are crucial for designing effective habitat creation projects and setting realistic ecological expectations for newly formed lotic environments.

Abstract: Weston Canyon Rockshelter is a site in southeastern Idaho that has been inhabited by humans from over 8,000 years BP until the historic period. The site has been excavated previously in 1969, and is the subject of two reports. The first (Delisio, 1970) focuses on the lithic and cultural material from the rockshelter, and the second (Miller, 1972) on the faunal remains. Since these reports, previously unidentified faunal specimens have been catalogued, necessitating a reanalysis of the zooarchaeological material from the site. Using prey choice models and Optimal Foraging Theory as a framework, this study makes use of artiodactyl indices to assess the hunting patterns of human groups, and how these changed over time. Weston Canyon shows a slight decline in the index, although notably this is not linked to an overall decrease in the number of artiodactyls present. A shift in site use could be one explanation for the pattern seen at Weston Canyon, with a change towards longer-term settlements driving changes in foraging behaviors that may have ultimately led to the depression of artiodactyl stocks. A change in climate, as has been documented elsewhere in the Great Basin and Snake River Plain. More information is needed to explain the patterns seen in greater detail.

When people think about the arts, they often think of performances, galleries, and entertainment. But the impact goes far beyond the stage.

Join us for a conversation with leaders from three of Idaho's premier arts organizations, including Laura Kendall, Executive Director of the Morrison Center, as they explore how the arts fuel downtown Boise's economy, attract tourism, strengthen education, and create a more connected community. Through local data, behind-the-scenes stories, and real-world examples, this panel will highlight why investing in the arts means investing in Idaho's future. The Morrison Center alone generates tens of millions of dollars in economic impact annually while serving as a hub for arts education and community engagement.

Whether you're an arts enthusiast, community leader, business professional, or simply curious about what makes a city thrive, you'll leave with a new perspective on the powerful role the arts play in shaping the place we call home.

The presentation lasts about 30 minutes, followed by time for questions and casual conversation. Expect something more like a TED Talk: approachable, engaging and designed to spark curiosity.

Tapped Minds is open to alumni, students, faculty, staff and community members, and there is no cost to attend. An RSVP is encouraged to help with planning, but walk-ins are always welcome.

As a bonus, $1 from every beer sold between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. will be donated to the Boise State Alumni Association to support alumni programs and community-building efforts.

A former Guggenheim Fellow and a recipient of the Iowa Poetry Prize and the San Francisco State Poetry Center Book Award, she has been a finalist for the Griffin Prize, the National Book Award, and the LA Times Book Award and was awarded the 2025 Paul Engle Award by the Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature. She also translates poetry and art criticism from French and has won the PEN USA Award in Translation, the 2024 ALTA National Translation Prize, and the 2025 Stephen Mitchell Prize She divides her time between France and California.

About Rod Smith

Rod Smith is the author of Touché, Deed, Music or Honesty, Protective Immediacy, and In Memory of My Theories. His work has appeared in The Baffler, Eternal Sections, The Nation, The New York Times, Shenandoah, and many others. Smith has taught at The Iowa Writers' Workshop, The Maryland Institute College of Art, The Corcoran College of Art + Design, and George Mason University. He co-edited The Selected Letters of Robert Creeley (University of California Press, 2014). He edits the journal Aerial, publishes Edge Books, and manages Bridge Street Books in Washington, DC.

However, the road from initial discovery or innovation to end user is long and marred with challenges related to funding, protection, marketing, manufacturing, and regulation. AI and computing technologies are rapidly changing how we learn, work, conduct research, solve problems, and serve communities. These changes create exciting opportunities, but they also raise important questions about ethics, access, trust, risk, adoption, and human impact.

This two-day SioC workshop will bring together students, faculty, researchers, community members, educators, and industry partners to exchange ideas, address real-world challenges, and build new partnerships around responsible and creative uses of AI and computing technologies.

Keynote Speaker
The workshop will feature keynote speaker Dr. Jay Yang.

Dr. Yang is the Reisenauer Family Director of Institute for Informatics and Applied Technology at Gonzaga University, leading the transformation of education and learning across disciplines with Generative AI. He has 20+ years of higher-ed experiences between Rochester Institute of Technology and Gonzaga University.

Themed Sessions
Each session will run for approximately two to three hours and will include:

Theme/session overview — an introduction to the topic, key issues, and guiding questions.Panel conversation — two or three speakers offering different perspectives from research, education, community, or industry.Roundtable discussion — audience-led small-group conversations to identify challenges, share ideas, and explore opportunities for future collaboration.AI Hesitance 9/17/26
This session examines hesitance toward AI adoption, including concerns related to trust, privacy, bias, reliability, job displacement, training, ethics, and access. This session explores AI as a catalyst for research, creative activity, teaching, and learning across educational settings. Participants will consider how AI can support innovation while also raising important questions about academic integrity, equity, learning design, assessment, and support for students and educators.

RISE + AI Scholarship 9/18/26
This session will feature Boise State’s NSF-funded Responsible Innovation and Scholarship Experience program (RISE) project team. Graduate researchers will share how they engage with ethical principles in compute-related research across areas such as biomedicine, ecology, machine reasoning, and AI scholarship. Participants will explore how to mitigate AI-related risks, engage stakeholders, and incorporate human flourishing throughout innovation.

Tech Kitchen 9/18/26
This session invites participants to bring real-world challenges that could potentially be addressed through AI or computing technologies. The focus will be on connecting problems with creative ideas, practical tools, and potential partnerships.

Participants will learn how to interpret Clarity report data, including clicks, scroll depth, heatmaps, and session recordings, and how to use those insights to make practical content improvements. We’ll discuss what the data can tell us and how to turn user behavior patterns into better page structure, clearer calls to action, and more useful content.

We'll also cover how Clarity is able to provide us with user insights that automatically protecting user privacy.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to identify common user behavior patterns in Microsoft Clarity, recognize potential content and usability issues, and apply simple improvements to help visitors find and use information more effectively.

Abstract: Snow cover strongly modulates the amplitude and spectral content of infrasound recorded in snow-covered environments. Using howitzer avalanche mitigation detonations as repeatable impulsive sources in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah, we examine spatial and temporal variations in recorded infrasonic signals. We develop an automated explosion picker constrained by expected acoustic time-of-flight, azimuth migration, and deviations in peak signal amplitude relative to event averages to construct a catalog of 151 identified artillery ordinance detonations across 71 known target locations. Infrasonic waveforms recorded by two ground-based sensor arrays are analyzed over a 15-day period during the late 2022–2023 winter season and compared with snow depth measurements from a nearby SNOTEL station. Results show that sensor-specific attenuation and spectral filtering occurs at scales less than 30 meters when sensors are buried by 2+ meters of snow. We speculate that snowpack heterogeneity can obscure true source characteristics and location accuracy over small spatial scales. Consequently, amplitude-based interpretations from individual buried microphones may misrepresent explosive yield or source intensity if snow-mediated site effects are not considered. Wind and temperature effects on acoustic time-of-flight contribute additional signal variability, though their influence cannot be fully resolved due to limited meteorological data. Furthermore, we demonstrate that dynamic snowpack conditions exert first-order control on infrasonic observations and provide recommendations therein to mitigate the influence of snow on recorded infrasound.

About Ariel Delgado Dixon

Ariel Delgado Dixon was born in Trenton, New Jersey and is the author of two novels, Sourland (2026) and Don't Say We Didn't Warn You (2022). Her writing has received support from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Yaddo, the Studios of Key West, and as a Hemingway Writer-in-Residence in Ketchum, Idaho. She lives in Western Massachusetts, where she teaches at Smith College and works in farming.

About Mary Pauline Lowry

Mary Pauline Lowry is the author of the novels The Roxy Letters and Wildfire. She has an MA in English/Creative Writing from the University of Texas and an MFA in Creative Writing from Boise State University. Participants will learn how to interpret Clarity report data, including clicks, scroll depth, heatmaps, and session recordings, and how to use those insights to make practical content improvements. We’ll discuss what the data can tell us and how to turn user behavior patterns into better page structure, clearer calls to action, and more useful content.

We'll also cover how Clarity is able to provide us with user insights that automatically protecting user privacy.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to identify common user behavior patterns in Microsoft Clarity, recognize potential content and usability issues, and apply simple improvements to help visitors find and use information more effectively.
