Here is an excerpt from the abstract: "Inspired by voyaging on land and sea, the world’s first academic program in ethnomathematics was founded at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM) by cultural practitioners, researchers, community organizers, and Dr. Furuto in 2018. The UHM Ethnomathematics Program empowers mathematics teacher leaders to be locally-minded, global citizens who engage in rigorous, relevant, and contextualized content that amplifies the voices of their students. In the presentation, Dr. Furuto will share voyaging stories, insights about mathematics that we can glean from the study of ethnomathematics, and experiences with students, teachers, and researchers who think deeply about how we can support equitable teaching and learning environments, where mathematics is a vehicle to work toward equity, empowerment, and dignity for all."

Abstract: This thesis examines how criminological theories explain gender differences in white-collar crime through a systematic review of quantitative research published between 2005 and 2025. Scholarship consistently documents gender disparities in economic crime and sentencing outcomes, but few studies evaluate if traditional criminological models account for these trends. Using the PRISMA 2020 statement, 97 records were initially identified and narrowed down to 14 peer-reviewed quantitative studies that included women in their sample, engaged with criminological theory, and focused on white-collar crime. The review compares the explanatory power of social learning theory, general strain theory, social bond theory, the liberation hypothesis, the pathways perspective, and a gendered theory of offending. Findings indicate that traditional, gender-neutral theories are rarely operationalized and possess limited interpretive utility for observed gender differences. Conversely, gendered and pathways-based frameworks receive stronger empirical validation, particularly in explaining occupational segregation, hierarchical positioning, leadership roles in corporate misconduct, and differential sentencing outcomes. Across studies, gender functions less as an individual trait and more as a structural characteristic ingrained within organizational structures and institutional decision-making. The results suggest that gender variations in white-collar crime are best understood through structural and relational contexts rather than personal criminogenic tendencies. Together, these results underscore the need for theoretically refined, structurally informed, and intersectional research designs capable of more precisely modeling gendered dynamics in white-collar offending and institutional response.

Abstract: This study examined factors influencing staff adoption of immersive simulation technologies within undergraduate nursing education. Grounded in the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), the research employed an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design. Phase One consisted of a cross-sectional survey administered to professional staff working in nursing simulation environments. Survey items were adapted to reflect simulation-based learning contexts and measured core UTAUT constructs, including performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, behavioral intention, and use behavior. Quantitative data were analyzed using reliability diagnostics, composite score construction, bootstrapped regression analysis, and independent-samples t-tests to explore predictive relationships and role-based differences. Phase Two involved semi-structured interviews with a purposive subset of survey participants to explore contextual factors shaping technology adoption experiences. Interview data were analyzed using thematic analysis procedures to identify patterns that elaborated and contextualized quantitative findings. Integration occurred during interpretation, allowing qualitative results to explain and refine quantitative patterns. Findings contribute to understanding how perceived educational value, usability considerations, organizational support structures, and operational constraints influence staff engagement with immersive simulation technologies. The study offers implications for simulation lab management, competency-based education alignment, and future research on technology adoption in professional healthcare education contexts.

Abstract: Oregon is positioned to become a national leader in integrated subsurface solutions that advance climate goals, strengthen energy security, and support resilient domestic supply chains. The state has the potential to develop a thriving carbon-negative economy by attracting and deploying direct air capture, point-source carbon removal, with geologic carbon sequestration (GCS), leveraging Oregon’s Climate Protection Program. Oregon’s statutory ambitions, deep greenhouse-gas reductions by 2035 and net-zero emissions by 2050, will require a portfolio of approaches. Regional carbon-management hubs that can safely and permanently store carbon dioxide (CO₂) could provide a scalable pathway to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors, such as the cement industry. In support of this opportunity, the State has directed the Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI) and the Department of State Lands (DSL) to evaluate GCS potential in the Columbia River Basalt Group, with emphasis on scientific characterization, risk management, and long-term stewardship.
At the same time, secure and reliable energy is increasingly central to Oregon’s economic competitiveness. Population growth, expanding data center demand for energy, and electrification are intensifying pressure on energy systems. Clean, low carbon hydrogen offers a versatile, domestic fuel option for transportation, industrial applications, and dispatchable power, producing zero greenhouse-gas emissions at the point of use and offering a pathway to reduce economy wide emissions.

Finally, the energy transition is rapidly increasing demand for critical minerals. Oregon’s long mining history, dominated by gold, silver, copper, and nickel, also includes a legacy of mine wastes and records that may contain overlooked critical minerals, historically discarded before their modern importance was recognized. By integrating historic datasets with new geological mapping, airborne geophysical surveys, targeted assessments, and stakeholder engagement, Oregon can guide responsible exploration and development, build workforce pathways, and improve mine life-cycle management.

Bio: Ruarri J. Day-Stirrat is a geologist with many years of exploration and regulatory experience. Dr. Day-Stirrat is Oregon State Geologist and Executive Director of the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI). DOGAMI surveys the geology of Oregon and regulates Surface Mining, Chemical Process Mining, drilling for Geothermal, Oil & Gas, and all exploration activities in those areas. Prior to leading an executive agency of Oregon State Government, Dr. Day-Stirrat spent 11 years in geoscience research in Oil & Gas solving problems related to rocks and water and developing technologies for exploration. He has published more than 30 peer-reviewed publications across method development, clay mineralogy, machine learning, and fluid flow in porous media. He is an expert in lithium in claystones, a Registered Geologist in Oregon, a licensed Professional Geoscientist in Texas and President-Elect of the Association of American State Geologists.

About Barbara Stoll

Barbara Stoll worked in the television industry for over 40 years. She started as a production coordinator on the American sitcom “Silver Spoons." She served as executive producer on numerous hit shows, including “Roseanne," the highest rated program on television for nine years. Since then, Barbara produced shows for Sony, Twentieth Century Fox, Disney, CBS, NBC and Lifetime. She produced “The Kenan Show” starring Kenan Thompson from “Saturday Night Live” with the standup comedian and actor, Chris Rock, in the director’s chair. Barbara grew up on the East Coast of the United States. After University, she moved to Los Angeles where she earned a Master’s Degree in Film, Animation and Television from UCLA.

Abstract: Laser-induced graphene (LIG) is an emerging graphitic material with high surface area, tunable electrical properties, and a scalable, direct-write fabrication pathway that is well suited for flexible electronics and sensing applications. Conventional LIG synthesis relies predominantly on carbon dioxide (10.6 µm) lasers, which are limited by diffraction-constrained resolution, high system cost, and bulk photothermal heating that restricts integration with high-density and lightweight electronic architectures.

This dissertation establishes a novel synthesis framework for laser-induced graphene using a previously unexplored visible-wavelength (450 nm) laser, enabling high-resolution patterning, reduced thermal damage, and compatibility with low-power, benchtop manufacturing platforms. By systematically investigating laser fluence, scan speed, and environmental conditions, this work elucidates the structure–property–processing correlations governing LIG formation, morphology, defect density, and electrical performance.

Terrestrial synthesis studies demonstrate the formation of nanocrystalline, defect-rich graphene with feature sizes approaching 15 µm, suitable for flexible and additively manufactured electronic devices. Building on this foundation, the synthesis process is extended to reduced-gravity environments, where the suppression of buoyancy-driven convection fundamentally alters thermal transport and gas evolution during graphitization. Microgravity experiments reveal significant differences in porosity, crystallinity, and defect distribution relative to terrestrial LIG, establishing gravity as a first-order processing variable in laser-induced graphene synthesis.

The developed material platform is applied to the fabrication of flexible chemiresistive gas sensors capable of detecting plant-emitted volatile organic compounds, demonstrating the suitability of visible-wavelength LIG for in-situ environmental monitoring. The fundamental study of laser–matter interactions in graphene synthesis establishes a scalable, low power manufacturing pathway for functional electronics in both terrestrial and space based environments.

Series Description

Hunting has long occupied a central place in art history—not only in natural history illustrations, grand paintings of human–animal combat, popular prints, and other visual media, but also as the impetus for a wide range of material culture. It produced artifacts as varied as hunting horns, trophies, horse tack, taxidermy, furniture, and fashion. As both a subject of artistic representation and a material practice, hunting offers a compelling lens through which to consider how human intervention shaped attitudes toward the environment, constructed gender roles, and reinforced social hierarchies. Images of the hunt—often defined by direct and violent incursions into nature—came to embody humanity’s presumed dominion over the natural world. To examine these works critically is to gain insight into the historical entanglement of humans and their environment, and into the role of that relationship in shaping cultural and historical identities. Supported by Humanities and Social Studies Initiative (HSSI).

About the Speaker

Amy Freund is an associate professor and the Kleinheinz Family Endowed Chair in Art History at Southern Methodist University. Freund is a specialist in 18th-century European art. Her first book, Portraiture and Politics in Revolutionary France (Penn State University Press, 2014), examines how sitters and artists used portraiture to reformulate personal and political identity during the French Revolution. Articles related to this project have been published in Eighteenth-Century Studies, The Art Bulletin and in Interior Portraiture and Masculine Identity in France, 1789–1914 (Ashgate, 2010). Her second book, Noble Beasts: Hunters and Hunted in Eighteenth-Century French Art (Yale University Press, 2026), analyzes the representation of the hunt in late 17th- and 18th-century France. Research from this project has been published in Art History, Journal18, and several edited volumes. Freund is also the second vice president of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (ASECS) and a past president of the Historians of Eighteenth-Century Art and Architecture (HECAA).

This week, Faith Quigley from the University of Idaho, College of Law will give her talk titled, FA National Energy Emergency in a Globalized Economy: The Law of Modern Mining Supply Chains.

This talk gives students a high-level overview of how modern mining supply chains work and why so many minerals used in the United States are mined overseas. It explains how environmental laws of the 1970s, such as the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act, increased regulation in the United States and pushed many mining companies to shift operations to cheaper, less regulated jurisdictions abroad. It also explores why U.S. companies often mine overseas while foreign companies pursue projects within the United States. Using current examples and the discussion around a “national energy emergency,” the presentation asks students to think about the tradeoffs between domestic and global supply chains. It encourages them to consider these issues from corporate, community, government, and environmental perspectives, and to ask whether critical mineral supply chains could—or should—become more domestic, including in places like Idaho.

Faith Quigley is a third-year law student at the University of Idaho College of Law. She is currently spending her final semester in the Semester-in-Practice program at the United States District Court for the District of Idaho in Judge B. Lynn Winmill’s chambers. She is also a legal intern for Idaho State Representative Annie Henderson Haws (D-16), co-leads a pediatric cancer/air quality initiative at TerraGraphics International Foundation (TIFO) as a legal intern, works in the College of Law’s Criminal Appellate Legal Aid Clinic, and serves as a research assistant to several professors for projects involving international human rights law, criminal procedure, and statutory interpretation.
Faith is active in academic scholarship and writes on mining, climate, and related corporate governance issues. She will sit for the Idaho Bar Exam this summer and will join the Idaho Attorney General’s Office Civil Litigation & Constitutional Defense Division as a Civil Litigation Fellow before clerking for the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
Faith did her undergraduate degree in geochemistry and environmental science at Olivet Nazarene University in her hometown in Illinois. She moved to Idaho for the mountains and greatly enjoys running and hiking here!

Abstract: Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer mortality among women in the United States, largely attributed to metastatic spread to distant tissues. While the five-year survival rate for breast cancer patients with regional metastasis is 87%, it declines to 32% in patients with distant metastasis. It is known that mutational burden is increased in metastatic breast cancer tissue, and that mutations drive breast cancer metastasis. Breast cancer progression is driven by mutations because they promote intratumoral heterogeneity, and this genetic variation gives rise to cells with enhanced metastatic characteristics and treatment resistance. However, the role of Oncostatin M (OSM) in genetic stability has not yet been reported. Notably, OSM is an inflammatory cytokine that has been shown to promote breast cancer metastasis and is associated with reduced overall survival in breast cancer patients. We wanted to explore the hypothesis that chromosomal instability is induced by OSM and is a contributing factor to OSM-driven breast cancer metastasis. We demonstrate that OSM increased micronuclear frequency in the luminal A breast cancer cell lines tested. Additionally, OSM significantly increases DNA fragmentation in T47D cells. OSM differentially regulates PPIF and CAT, which regulate mitochondrial function and redox homeostasis. Importantly, micronuclear frequency was rescued in OSM-treated T47D cells by the reactive oxygen species scavenger, N-acetylcysteine. Collectively, these results support a redox-dependent mechanism for OSM-induced genetic instability. These findings suggest that luminal A breast cancer patients may respond best to an OSM-targeting therapy, and that this therapy would prevent the progression of breast cancer by reducing genetic instability.

Abstract: Mid-Ocean Ridges (MOR) produce over 75% of Earth’s volcanic material, providing a window into the mantle composition, melt generation, and crustal accretion processes (Bennett et al., 2019). These magmatic processes are strongly correlated with seafloor spreading rates (Langmuir et al., 1992). Despite decades of research focused primarily at fast and slow spreading ridges, the geochemical variability of Mid-Ocean Ridge Basalts (MORB) at super-fast spreading ridges is poorly constrained (Sinton et al., 1991; 2002). This study investigates the 17º20’S South East Pacific Rise (SEPR), a super-fast spreading ridge. Measurements of major and trace element compositions alongside radiogenic isotope ratios will be used to quantify spatial and compositional variability in MORBs. These data will be combined with petrologic modeling to provide a comprehensive understanding of fractional crystallization, magma mixing, partial melting, and mantle source at a super-fast spreading ridge. These results will be compared to those at the fast-spreading ridge 9º50’N East Pacific Rise (EPR) and the slow-spreading ridge 14ºN Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) to evaluate the relationship between spreading rate and magmatic processes. Additionally, this study will utilize high resolution sampling to investigate how compositions vary spatially along MOR axes at various spreading rates. The results of this study will provide a better understanding of how spreading rate relates to MORB formation and how it impacts the geochemical heterogeneity found along the ridge. This study will offer a reference point for future investigations of MORs with diverse spreading rates and different geochemical variability.

Abstract: We introduce several new extensions of the Geometric Scattering Transform (GST) built on diffusion wavelets for geometric deep learning. First, we propose InfoGain Wavelets, a novel algorithm for selecting the scales used to construct the GST's diffusion wavelet filter bank from geometric data (graphs and manifolds). Second, we introduce Manifold Filter-Combine Networks (MFCNs), a flexible class of deep networks for point cloud data assumed to lie on a manifold, for which we demonstrate the utility of the GST in the Filter layer(s). Third, we introduce Vector Diffusion Wavelets for geometric Graph Neural Networks (VDW-GNNs), a method which extends the GST in geometric deep learning to data with vector-valued features (e.g., positions or velocities). We demonstrate the utility of our techniques for geometric deep learning with experiments on synthetic and real-world data sets.

What can seeds teach us about adapting to change and uncertainty? What does a forest show us about cooperation and belonging? Turning to the natural world as a rigorous field of study not only offers us an endless well of intrigue but also solutions to some of the biggest challenges we face. We are living in a time ripe with division, but even something as simple as planting and tending a seed brings us immediately into interconnection with a whole host of other fascinating beings. And when we join together with folks who also recognize these “others” as the wise teachers they are, our collective imaginations unlock, and we are able to envision - and enact - a multitude of plausible, breathtaking alternatives to business-as-usual.

The goal of the The Idea of Nature lecture series is to promote interdisciplinary inquiry about the environment and to foster dialogue across the campus and community. Dr. Samantha Harvey founded The Idea of Nature in 2012. She joined the faculty of the Department of English Literature at Boise State University in 2010. She received her Ph.D. from Cambridge University in English Literature and her B.A. in English and the Study of Religion from Harvard University. Dr. Harvey's teaching and research interests include nineteenth-century British poetry and prose, transatlantic Romanticism, and literature and the environment.

This $150 workshop will cover nearly all aspects of songbird aging, with a focus on molt and identifying molt limits.

The workshop is open to all experience levels, but is geared toward folks with some general knowledge of birds and bird banding. Beginners will gain a broad understanding of in-hand songbird aging methods, and folks with prior experience aging birds are likely to come away with some new aging techniques to try out, and a deeper understanding of some tricky subjects like eccentric molt, WRP codes, and reading Pyle.

This will be a five-week virtual course beginning in February and ending in mid March. There will be two 1.5 hour classes per week and optional homework. Exact dates and times to be announced.

Abstract: Acoustic emission monitoring has been widely applied to compressive testing of rock and has been substantially used to investigate the Brazilian tension test. This is the first study focused on using acoustic emission monitoring to assess the differences in microfracture source mechanism between Brazilian, ring compression, and ring tension testing. The dominant frequency analysis was used to evaluate the acoustic emission source mechanism and micro-failure of granite specimens under different tensile test methods and variable diameter sizes. Acoustic emission monitoring determined that the acoustic emission response is higher when resulting from a Brazilian test than from a ring tension or ring compression test, potentially because Brazilian specimens contain more material. The dominant frequency analysis demonstrated that the source mechanism generating microfractures within rock under tension testing is subject to change based on test method. On average, the ring tension test produced the highest percentage of tensile microfractures. Among all the ring tension and ring compression tests, the percentage of shear microfractures generally decreased as specimen diameter increased, while the percentage of tensile microfractures increased as the specimen diameter increased, indicating larger specimen diameters to be beneficial in tension testing. This inverse relationship was most notable among the ring tension tests. All three test methods determined that tensile microfractures occur mostly in the beginning of the test and continue throughout. Mixed-mode microfractures increase significantly as the tensile microfractures decrease and continue through the remainder of the test, or the transition between mixed-mode and tensile microfractures is random. Shear microfractures occur primarily near the end of the tests, if present. The presence of shear microfractures typically increases around the same time as the mixed-mode microfractures appear, just at a smaller scale, if present.

At 7:30 PM on Friday, March 13, 2026, Gizzi will give a reading of his work, followed by a Q and A and book signing. Free and open to the public, the Hemingway Center Reading Series brings renowned writers to campus each year.

About Peter Gizzi

Peter Gizzi's recent books include, "Fierce Elegy" (Wesleyan, 2023), "Now It's Dark" (Wesleyan,
2020), and "Archeophonics" (Wesleyan, 2016). In 2020 Carcanet published "Sky Burial: New and
Selected Poems" in the UK. His honors include fellowships from The Rex Foundation, The Fund for
Poetry, The Foundation for Contemporary Arts, The Guggenheim Foundation, and The Judith E.
Wilson Visiting Fellowship in Poetry at the University of Cambridge. In 2018 Wesleyan brought out
"In the Air: Essays on the Poetry of Peter Gizzi." He teaches poetry and poetics in the MFA Program at
the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. In 2025, Gizzi won the prestigious T.S. Eliot Poetry Prize.

Known as America’s Big Band, the Jazz Ambassadors are the premier touring jazz orchestra of the United States Army. Formed in 1969, this 19-piece ensemble has received critical acclaim throughout the United States and abroad performing America’s original art form: jazz.

Performances by the Jazz Ambassadors offer some of the most versatile programming of any big band. Concerts include classic big band standards, instrumental and vocal solo features, patriotic favorites, contemporary jazz works, and original arrangements and compositions by past and present members of the Jazz Ambassadors. Many of these original works are available for free download through Perspectives, a jazz education initiative by the Jazz Ambassadors.

The Jazz Ambassadors have performed in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Japan, India, and Europe, and in joint concerts with the Boston Pops, National Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Seattle Symphony, and at Carnegie Hall with Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops. Our usual meeting time will be 1pm to 5pm on Friday afternoons, with flexibility on arrival and departure times depending on the task. For most work days we could use around 15 folks to help out.

We need volunteers to help us on scheduled work days:

Building, closing, and maintaining trails

Taking willow cuttings

Planting seedlings

Sewing native seeds

Constructing split-rail fences

Installing signage

Picking up litter

Our goal is to gather a team of about 15 volunteers for each workday. Whether you can help once or on a recurring basis, we would love your support!

Robin tours widely and has been featured on NPR’s On Being with Krista Tippett and in 2015 addressed the general assembly of the United Nations on the topic of “Healing Our Relationship with Nature.” Kimmerer is a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of Environmental Biology, and the founder and director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment, whose mission is to create programs which draw on the wisdom of both indigenous and scientific knowledge for our shared goals of sustainability. In 2022 she was named a MacArthur Fellow.

As a writer and a scientist, her interests in restoration include not only restoration of ecological communities, but restoration of our relationships to land. She holds a BS in Botany from SUNY ESF, an MS and PhD in Botany from the University of Wisconsin and is the author of numerous scientific papers on plant ecology, bryophyte ecology, traditional knowledge and restoration ecology.

Dr. Ashutosh Mangalam, University of Iowa

Title: Microbiota and Humans: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly in Neuroinflammatory Disease

Abstract: The human microbiota plays a dual role in health and disease, acting as both a powerful ally and, under certain conditions, a driver of pathology. In neuroinflammatory diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS), growing evidence suggests that the gut microbiota can shapes immune response, influences susceptibility, and modulates disease severity. Using a bedside-to-bench-to-bedside framework, our work integrates cross-sectional studies of MS patients with mechanistic experiments in animal models to define how specific gut microbes and their metabolic products promote either immune regulation or inflammation. These studies reveal that loss of beneficial symbionts and expansion of pro-inflammatory microbes can shift the immune balance toward autoimmunity, while targeted dietary and microbial interventions can restore immune homeostasis in experimental MS. Together, these complementary perspectives highlight the “good, bad, and ugly” roles of the microbiota in neuroinflammation and point toward microbiome-informed strategies for understanding and ultimately treating MS.

Abstract

The rapid development of large language models (LLMs) has driven a paradigm shift across multiple areas of artificial intelligence, enabling unified end-to-end solutions that operate across modalities such as text, vision, and audio. Within the field of spoken dialogue systems (sds), these models have influenced the design of dialogue management (dm)–the component responsible for controlling the flow of the dialogue and when the system should act.

This literature review first surveys previous efforts to develop approaches that more closely approximate the dynamics of human con- versation, with particular emphasis on incremental processing (i.e., fast-processing, word-by-word). Then, I connect robot planning research with sds, which argues that online decision-making is more suited for natural dialogue settings, with continuous updates and inputs. The structural similarities between dialogue management and planning suggest that planning-inspired abstractions may provide a useful foundation for designing systems capable of continuous perception, reasoning, and interaction.

Finally, this paper examines how the advancement of LLMs enabled the field to move closer to the incremental processing vision while highlighting persistent challenges related to commitment, hypothesis tracking, timing action, and revision. I close by outlining open research questions and arguing that a true incremental processing architecture is still needed, and the huge potential of an end-to-end audio pipeline.

Planting seedlings

Sewing native seeds

Constructing split-rail fences

Installing signage

Picking up litter

Our goal is to gather a team of about 15 volunteers for each workday. Whether you can help once or on a recurring basis, we would love your support!

ABSTRACT:
Over the past several decades, electronics have relied on deterministic, binary states accessed by electrons to store and process information. The challenge of physical scaling of this approach motivates the need for post-CMOS or post-digital analog approaches to increase functional density and energy efficiency. Instead of using only electron motion to encode information, analog electronics can use electrical, thermal and electrochemical gradients in various heterogeneously integrated materials to move electrons, ions, and domains. Understanding the scientific basis of these complex, frequently coupled mechanisms is difficult, resulting in few reliable physics-based models that can be used by circuit and chip designers. These mechanisms also present increased sensitivity to variability, noise, and poorly controlled kinetic processes. As such, despite decades of research and promising laboratory-scale performance, knowledge gaps in the features of analog electronics have led to their consistent failures to meet the stringent requirements needed for their commercialization. In my presentation, I will discuss our recent work to address these challenges using 3-terminal electrochemical random access memory (ECRAM)1 that encodes information in three dimensional volumes, rather than 2-dimensions channels or 1-dimensional filaments and combines thermodynamic and kinetic mechanisms to stabilize a high density of analog states.

BIO:
Alec Talin received Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from UCLA in 1995. He is a Senior Scientist at Sandia National Laboratories, an Adjunct Associate Professor of Materials Science at the University of Maryland, College Park, and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society. Prior to joining Sandia, Alec spent 6 years at Motorola Labs in Phoenix, AZ and 3 years at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, MD. His interests focus on nanoelectronics and nanoionics, with applications to energy efficient computing, energy conversion, energy storage and national security.

About Leire Bilbao

Leire Bilbao (Ondarroa, 1978) authored several poetry collections, including "Ezkatak" (Susa, 2006); "Scanner" (Susa, 2011), a bilingual anthology; "Entre escamas" (Marisma, 2018), and "Etxeko urak" (Susa, 2020). This last collection won the Lauaxeta Prize and has been translated into Spanish (Aguas Madres), Catalan (Saliva), Greek (Nepa Manez) and Italian (Acque di casa). Bilbao has published several children’s books and has received the Premio Euskadi for Children’s literature on two occasions, as well as the 2019 Kirico Prize for her book Bichopoemas (Kalandraka, 2019) and recently the national Prize of Children´s and Young Literature for Klera (Elkar, 2024).

About Joana Urtasun

Joana Urtasun is a writer and translator who grew up between the Basque Country and the UK and is based in New York. She received her MFA in Poetry and Literary Translation from Columbia University. Her work has appeared in The London Magazine, METAL Magazine, Berkeley Poetry Review, and Anthropocene Poetry Journal, among others, and she was a finalist in The Sewanee Review’s sixth poetry contest. Leire Bilbao’s, Between Fish Scales: Selected Poems (World Poetry, 2026) is her first book of translation.

This month’s topic: Behind the Mic of the Scandalized Podcast

Hear from Professors Jaci Kettler and Charlie Hunt, as they take you behind the scenes of some of American history's wildest political scandals with their Boise State Public Radio podcast, Scandalized. Last season, Jaci and Charlie spilled the tea on some food-related scandals, including some of the ways politicians have used — and misused — food on the campaign trail to try to relate to voters. At this Tapped Minds session, Charlie and Jaci will share a few more food scandals that were left on the cutting room floor, and answer your questions about the scandals they've covered on the shows first couple of seasons.

The presentation lasts about 30 minutes, followed by time for questions and casual conversation. Expect something more like a TED Talk: approachable, engaging and designed to spark curiosity.

Tapped Minds is open to alumni, students, faculty, staff and community members, and there is no cost to attend. An RSVP is encouraged to help with planning, but walk-ins are always welcome.

As a bonus, $1 from every beer sold between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. will be donated to the Boise State Alumni Association to support alumni programs and community-building efforts.

Dr. Boris Vinatzer, Virginia Tech

Title: Making Sense of Nonsense: Opportunities and Challenges of Metagenomics for Pathogen Identification

Abstract: The sooner we can detect an emerging disease outbreak, the more likely it is that we can contain it before it turns into an epidemic or pandemic. In order to contain an outbreak, we need to develop high throughput diagnostics. In the case of human and animal diseases, we also need to develop vaccines and drugs to prevent and treat illness. In the case of plant diseases, we need to develop disease-resistant crops. To do all this, we need to sequence the emerging pathogen as soon as possible. Metagenomic sequencing, i.e., sequencing all DNA or RNA in a sample of a symptomatic host, was used to identify and sequence SARS-CoV-2 in January 2020, which allowed to develop PCR tests and vaccines. My group is developing metagenomic sequencing for animal and plant pathogen identification. Many challenges still need to be overcome to make this approach work routinely, reliably, and quickly. This seminar will go over the basic concepts and technologies used in metagenomic sequencing for pathogen identification. Using examples of bacterial and fungal plant diseases, current challenges and how we might overcome them will be highlighted.

Each screening features a faculty guest speaker from a variety of disciplines, followed by an optional community discussion. Thanks to a generous grant from the Villa Albertine Foundation, our lineup has evolved. This year, the BFFF will screen six critically acclaimed films, ranging from iconic New Wave classics to contemporary action. There is truly something for everyone.

Our usual meeting time will be 1pm to 5pm on Friday afternoons, with flexibility on arrival and departure times depending on the task. For most work days we could use around 15 folks to help out.

We need volunteers to help us on scheduled work days:

Building, closing, and maintaining trails

Taking willow cuttings

Planting seedlings

Sewing native seeds

Constructing split-rail fences

Installing signage

Picking up litter

Our goal is to gather a team of about 15 volunteers for each workday. Whether you can help once or on a recurring basis, we would love your support!
